16thDecember 2022, Trou aux Cerfs( crater)

A very leisurely start to today with me chasing a very excited dog around the garden. We knew that Jason finished work at 2pm today and he had to take some documents to the bank at Moka so it was a short space of time for us to fill as we were going with Vicky and Jason. The bank was in the very modern Mall of Bagatelle in Moka and the idea was to have lunch at Nandos.

Anyway, Geoff and I set off to search for the crater in the city of Curepipe. After searching my book again I discovered that the crater and possibly the area around it is called Trou aux Cerfs. Google maps worked perfectly today and we found it with no problems. It seemed a very upmarket place to live overlooking much of the north eastern part of the island.

One of the guides explained to me that 5 slaves had died in/near the crater and that the lake water in the crater was toxic. If I remember correctly the crater is 1 km wide and surrounded by thick forest. If we had had longer it would have been possible to walk around the top.

We hurried back so that we would be ready to leave promptly when Jason finished work. 

The trip to the mall was a first for Geoff and I both in the visit and eating in Nando’s. My food was great, chicken and pineapple kebabs. The shops were expensive on the whole, mainly because they were all the top named brands eg. Boss, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren to name a few.

Vicky and Jason bought sunglasses for the fishing trip on Sunday and I did battle in Woolworths over a 30% reduction. I probably upset the staff because Jason had only just purchased a hat and I was buying the other one but they wouldn’t give us the discount unless we combined the 2 items. So I said refund Jason’s purchase and we would pay for the 2 together. “We can’t refund” they said so I said that was totally out of order and after much consulting they agreed to do it!

It was getting late and Jason was going out for his Christmas dinner ( for which he was going to be late as the traffic was horrendous) so we headed back.

11th December 2022, Sunday, Tamarin for brunch at the Nomad Restaurant

  I pottered around in the garden until I was called to say     that we were leaving for brunch at the     Nomad Restaurant. We returned to the village/town of Tamarin ( Jason stayed here when he first arrived on the island hence he knew the location.) Brunch was great and there was a Christmas tree and live, not noisy, music. It is very popular so a good choice for us. We have just FaceTimed Sue and Dave and found out that it is very, very cold at home so that they or at least Sue wasn’t going anywhere. We tried Benj and Annie but got no reply. We had a bit of a sit down before I fancied a walk to Flic en Flac which according to Nicola was about 20 minutes away. We took JuJu, the dog, with us and found out where all the “ posh” hotels with their lovely sandy and some rocky areas were located. 17t h December 2022, Aquarium,Grand Bale and Pamplemousses

A very busy day for us all especially Jason who did all the driving after a late night previously. Vicky and Jas organised the day for us. We drove to the other side of the Waterfront and into the Aquarium at Port Louis. There were numerous fish including Sand sharks, tiger and white tipped sharks and some very strange looking ones. At the beginning there were some seahorses which I think are lovely and seem really unreal. Our next trip was to head to the north coast at Grand Bale ( next to Mont Choisy where the golf tournament is being held at the moment.) We had lunch at the Bloom restaurant and then walked along to look at the Public Beach. It is a great shame that all the hotels have blocked off most of the coastline again and although the Public Beach is lovely it is also quite crowded. 21st December 2022, Bird Sanctuary

The only thing left on my “to do”list was to visit the Rivulet Terre Rouge Estuary Bird Sanctuary which was next to the Dockland North of Port Louis.   According to the information it is the largest estuary area in Mauritius and numerous birds migrate here between October and February. However as we arrived in the heat of the day at 1.30pm we only saw 2 or 3 birds so it was a bit disappointing. It was free so we can’t complain. The National Parks and the Government have gone to a lot of trouble to actually make the area attractive with a walkway, a boardwalk over the marshes, a hide, a plant greenhouse and 2 of the enormous tortoises. As it is next to the Docklands it is a complete contrast to the industrial area. On our way to the Bird Sanctuary we had to pass by the town of Albion so we popped down to have a look and discovered a really nice Public Beach area and the sea looked as though snorkelling would be good.
